Califet enjoying a wonderful season
CALIFET has been enjoying a wonderful season
to date with his runners in France. With progeny earnings in France
this season alone of almost €1,000,000, this has been his most
successful season so far. His 3 year olds are really excelling and
from a crop of 83 foals (his largest in France) he is already the
sire of 13 three year old winners this year. These successes currently
see him lying 3rd in the Leading Sires of 3 year olds behind only
Saint Des Saints and Martaline.
A common feature of Califets achievements at
stud to date is his ability to sire Fillies that are as good as
his geldings and this feature is quite notable again this year amongst
his 3 year olds. Amongst his winning fillies to date is MOMITA
HAS, a Listed hurdle winner at Auteuil for Jean Paul Gallorini.
Momita Has also attained a Listed placing and was recently placed
2nd on her debut over fences. Another prolific winning 3 year old
filly is A LA LUNA, a towering filly trained by Guillaume
Macaire. She has won two hurdles and a chase to date and looks a
really nice prospect. Other winning fillies have been BENUISCA
(winner on her debut for Arnaud Chaille Chaille), the dual bumper
winner BROOKDALE (Guy Cherel) and BELLA SUN (Phillipe
Journiac) a winner on her only start to date.
Amongst Califets winning 3yo geldings is the Guillaume Macaire
trained EL CALIFE. Winner on his debut over hurdles
in May, El Calife has followed up with 2 wins from 2 starts over
fences in August and in September at Enghien and looks a real bright
prospect. BERLAIN is another trained by leading trainer Macaire
and he has won both his starts to date- first time out in a bumper
and then followed up with hurdle win at Strasbourg on October 5th.
Another recent hurdle winner at Strasbourg was BEST DES DUNES
for Patrice Quinton.
Califet has sired numerous other recent bumper winners
including BAMAKO MORIVIERE and BLUE DRAGON, both trained
by Guy Cherel whilst the most impressive of his bumper winners to
date is dual winner BE MY HOPE, trained by Cherel for leading
owner Magalen Bryant. BIVOUAC, a winner earlier in the season
for Cherel has since moved to the UK and is now in training with
Nicky Henderson for Potensis Ltd.
As well as his winning three year olds, there have
been some notable placed efforts from his juvenile crop also. SOLWAY
finished 2nd in a Listed Hurdle at Auteuil on his debut for Cherel
in the colours of the Papot family, whilst Ellie Lellouche produced
BOSS DES MOTTES to finish 3rd on his debut in a competitive
bumper at Maison Laffittes at the end of September. He has reportedly
since been sold to the UK. Also making a recent pleasing debut was
MONYJEAN, a full brother to the Grade 1 placed 4yo CLARCAM
(Gordon Elliott). He finished 2nd, beaten just ¾ length,
in a hurdle race on October 19th.
Califets older crops have also been in good
form and LISTED winner and Grade 1 placed EPICEA has been
flying the flag for his 4 year old crop on French shores whilst
ANALIFET, CLARCAM and CALIPTO were strutting
their stuff on this side of the English Channel. Clarcam made a
very pleasing return to action this season by landing a 4yo hurdle
at Limerick and he is now going chasing. Calipto made a very satisfactory
return to action also by finishing runner-up to Triumph Hurdle winner
Tiger Roll at Cheltenham on October 18th. He may now return to Cheltenham
for the Greatwood Hurdle at the Open meeting in November. By all
accounts ANALIFET has made a full recovery from her pelvis
injury sustained at Leopardstown last Christmas and fingers crossed
we will see her back in action shortly as she really looked an exciting
prospect last year.
