CALIFET to Boardsmill Stud
Boardsmill Stud has added a new Stallion to their roster with the
acquisition of Califet, one of the leading National Hunt Sires in
France. The son of Freedom Cry is the sire of two high profile Juvenile
Hurdlers this season- the Willie Mullins trained Grade 3 winning
filly Analifet and the impressive Newbury winner Calipto, trained
by Paul Nicholls. The deal was brokered by Louisa and Phillip Carberry
of French based Carberry Bloodstock and Califet is due to arrive
at Boardsmill in the coming days.
A Group 2 winner in France of 9 races ranging from seven to twelve
furlongs, Califet split High Chaparral and Islington in the 2002
Prix de LArc de Triomphe at Longchamp, when beaten only 1
¾ lengths into fourth place. A model of consistency, Califet
only finished out of the first four on one occasion in twenty one
starts from two to four years.
As well as the above mentioned Juveniles, Califet is also the sire
of the Gordon Elliott trained four year old Clarcam, a winner over
hurdles and also placed at Grade 2 and Grade 3 level this season.
From a relatively small first book of mares in 2005, Califet was
the leading First Crop National Hunt sire of his year in a class
that included Martaline, Al Namix and Ballingarry. He has sired
Group winners on the flat, over hurdles and over fences including
six stakes winners at Autueil and most recently, he finished among
the list of Top 10 Leading Active National Hunt Sires in France
in 2013. On the back of his early success at stud, his largest crop
has just turned three years old in 2014.
Speaking of their new acquisition, William Flood said Califet
is a welcome addition at Boardsmill and will complement our existing
proven sires Kalanisi and Court Cave. He is an attractive individual
with great presence and stands 16.1 ½ h.h. Like Kalanisi
and Court Cave, he is a true siring bay.
Flood added Califet has proved his ability to upgrade his
mares and it is clear to see from his progeny performances that
his fillies are just as talented as his geldings. His Sire Line,
which has produced Grade 1 performers Pont Alexandre, Trifolium
and Pittoni to name a few, should be an attractive alternative to
breeders and his broodmare sire line (Kenmare) is that of current
Champion Hurdler Hurricane Fly.
Guy Cherel, who trained Califet, is one of the leading Trainers
and Breeders in France and has enjoyed a lot of success with his
progeny. He stated I have always supported Califet and I intend
to continue this support after he leaves France. He has produced
good progeny year in year out. I have several very nice 3yos
this year by Califet, whom I have no doubt will be winning good
races at Auteuil in the spring.
Califets fee has been set at €3,000 whilst Court Cave
will also stand at €3,000 in 2014 and Kalanisi at €4,000.
October terms apply to all sires.
