Big Flat Race Double for Kalanisi at Galway Festival
The ever versatile Kalanisi sired the winners of the feature flat
races on the 1st and 5th days of the 2010 Galway Festival.
First off the mark was his 5 year old son Admiral Barry who recorded
a facile win in the 2 mile Amateur Riders Handicap on the Monday.
Bred by John OConnor, Admiral Barry was recording his 2nd
win on the flat. He had some decent form as a two year old on the
flat including a 3rd place behind subsequent Irish Derby Winner
Frozen Fire. Now that connections have found the key to him, hopefully
it will be onwards and upwards for the Admiral, both on the flat
and over hurdles.
The feature race on the Friday was the 1m 4f Guiness Premier Handicap
and Rajik was bidding to make amends for his narrow defeat in the
same race 12 months previously. Held up close to the pace by the
impressive Joseph OBrien, Rajik always looked to be travelling
well. Rounding the home turn, OBrien was asking his mount
to close on the leaders and once they straightened for home, there
was only going to be one winner as Rajik powered up the hill to
win going away. Trained by Charlie Swan for the Rathcoffey Racing
Syndicate, the 5 year old was bred by His Highness The Aga Khan
who sold him as a 3 year old. Rajik seems best suited by a strongly
run Mile and a half with a stiff finish and looks an ideal type
to make his mark over hurdles. Interestingly, he gained his handicap
mark over hurdles before he hit form on the flat, so watch this
space, it shouldnt be too long before his name is added to
his sires growing list of winners under rules.
