BARIZAN rounds off great season for KALANISI
Barizan was the hugely impressive winner of the Grade 1 Four Year
Old at Punchestown on the final day of the 2009/10 National Hunt
The son of Kalanisi put up another magnificent display of front
running following his brave efforts in defeat at Cheltenham and
Running in his 3rd Grade 1 in the space of 5 weeks, Barizan set
off in front from flag fall and jumping fluently he gradually stretched
his lead with the favourite Carlito Brigante the nearest pursuer.
Ridden for the 1st time by Jason Maguire, the Evan Williams trained
winner was given a breather about a mile from home before kicking
on again before the home straight. At this stage there was only
going to be one winner as Barizan showed an amazing turn of foot
to skip clear and wing the last hurdle to run out a 13 length winner.
This was one of the best performances of the Punchestown Festival
by both horse and trainer. To put the training performance in perspective,
Barizan made his hurdling debut in June 2009 at Newton Abbot, he
raced every month from then until November notching up 5 wins in
the process and finishing with a defeat at Cheltenham at the Open
meeting on unsuitably heavy ground. He was then given a winter break
before reappearing at Cheltenham in the Triumph Hurdle where he
was backed from 40 to 1 into 14s and ran an incredibly brave race
to make all and just get collared up the hill by Soldatino. 3 weeks
later he re-appeared at Aintree in the Grade 1 Anniversary Hurdle
and again made all the running with a similar gutsy display in defeat.
To get the horse back for another Grade 1 after those two tremendous
efforts deserves a lot credit.
Speaking to Williams before the Punchestown race, he appeared very
apprehensive about the horses chance given his 2 recent hard
races in defeat, but the Welsh Wizard need not have had any worries
as he produced his stable star in tip top shape and has lots to
look forward to next season.
Evan Williams is a huge fan of Kalanisis stock describing
them as very tough and consistent and he has had 5 of
his sons in training and has won with all 5 including Grade 2 winner
Simarian, who Williams is looking forward to sending chasing this
season. Williams purchased Barizan in October 2008 for just £26,000.
Barizans Punchestown win rounded off another exceptional
National Hunt Season for Kalanisi. With one of the highest winners
to runners strike rate (48%), Kalanisi proved yet again why he is
proving so popular with astute breeders. Amongst his impressive
performers during the season were Grade 2 winning hurdler Alaivan,
who also finished 3rd in Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle behind Barizan,
his 2008 Champion Hurdle winner Katchit who finished 3rd in the
Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle, the ultra tough mare Sure Josie Sure (4 wins
for David Pipe) and exciting young horses Kind Of Easy (bumper winner
for Emma Lavelle), Zakatal (P Hobbs) and dual winner Tarvini (JJ
