Another Grade 2 Juvenile Hurdle winner for Kalanisi

The Kalanisi sired Kyrie Eleison ran out the game winner of the Grade 2 Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle at Fairyhouse on Saturday 21st February.

This was Kalanisi’s 2nd Gr 2 winning juvenile of the season, adding to the impressive victory of Simarian at Cheltenham’s recent ‘Open Meeting’.

Kyrie Eleison was having his 3rd start over hurdles within 4 weeks and displayed the same toughness associated with most of his sire’s stock by proving hard to pass once getting his head in front. Despite a mistake at the last hurdle, he galloped all the way to the line to beat Chevalier Country and Donegal.

Considering the Dessie Hughes trained winner only made his debut 4 weeks ago this was an impressive performance. Kyrie Eleison won two races on the flat in the UK for Richard Hannon and proved his liking for much better ground than he has encountered over hurdles to date. With this in mind, one would expect there is a lot more improvement to come when he gets his favoured ground conditions over the coming months.

Kyrie Eleison is yet another example of how Kalanisi’s progeny improve when switched from the flat to obstacles. The highest rating he ran off on the level was 73. Similarly, the above mentioned Simarian has an official rating of just 67 on the flat. Kalanisi’s champion hurdle winner Katchit also underlines this fact with his only win on the level coming off a mark of 75.

A close look at Kyrie Eleison’s dam line reveals that he hails from a family more associated with sprint distances than 2 mile hurdles. His dam Peratus, who was placed over 5 furlongs and never raced over further than 6 furlongs, is by Mujadil and is out of a Petorius mare.

Incidentally, the 9 year old Peratus was recently purchased by Boardsmill Stud at the Goffs February Sale for just €2,600 in foal to Bertolini. With her first foal now a Grade 2 hurdle winner, one would imagine Peratus’ value has increased considerably and a return visit to Kalanisi is on the cards for 2009.
