Kalanisi Sires impressive winner in Australia

Kalanisi’s incredible run of success in 2008 continued in Australia on Wednesday last (6th August). His 3 year old daughter ‘Grager’ was the impressive winner of a 1300m Fillies Maiden in Kembla Grange and defeated none other than ‘Movin Up, who at $2.2m was the most expensive yearling filly of her year and hails from the Woodlands/Darley empire

Having just her 3rd career start, Grager quickened clear in the final two furlongs and coasted to a comfortable 2 and a half length victory.

Trained by Gerald Ryan in Rosehill, Grager runs in the colours of her Australian breeder Graeme Spurdle. Grager is the result of an enterprising and novel mating decision from her breeder.

Following the purchase of Cherine at Tattersalls in 2003, Mr Spurdle sent his mare to visit Kalanisi at Gilltown Stud in Ireland in October 2004.

A keen fan of Kalanisi, Mr Spurdle wanted to breed a tough genuine racehorse with a blend of speed and stamina and thus opted for Kalanisi. Following her trip ‘home’ to Australia, Cherine foaled an attractive and correct filly later to be named Grager.

Grager is held in high regard by her connections and their long term aim is the Group 1 Australian Oaks in Randwick, Sydney next Easter. Before then, she will be competing in Group races at Melbourne and Sydney.

Here’s hoping Grager can add a Group 1 down under to add to Kalanisi’s already impressive stud record.
